Tools of Our Trade
Growing Areas
You must have the tools necessary to care for strawberry plants properly,
whether you grow them in the home or garden, in a pot or in the ground. There
are many different ways that you can grow strawberries. Here at James’
Strawberry Patch we use hand constructed strawberry growing sections with
tops that can be closed in bad weather. The sections work well and the
strawberries get plenty of sunlight during the day. The growing sections also
drain the water so the plants get plenty of water but they don’t drown in the
wet soil.

Protection and Tools
All crops need to be protected from pests/insects, birds and disease. Birds are
one type of pest for some growers. There needs to be some type of deterrent
for the birds, like noise, fake predator birds or scarecrows. Usually they will do
the trick. However, then you still have to deal with the insects. Sometimes you
can use other herb plants to confuse pests or repel them all together. Herbs
such as mint, basil, garlic, chives or onions work very well. Other organic
options also work, such as pepper spray or rotten eggs. For worms/slugs you
can also use beer in a glass inside your growing area. There are some organic
sprays specifically for strawberries which also work well.
